Pre Shave Oil
So I got my Dovo 6/8 Full Hollow for my birthday, had a great shave and then had to wait as I bought my Poor Man's Strop Kit. Also got probably the cheapest badger brush from Art of Shaving (despite having wet shaved even back in the day with my cartridge, only ever used stiff boar). It is definitely nice, not sure how I like the soft bristles, feel better but I also feel (probably all perception) that I have to do a lot more work to agitate the whiskers.
So tonight I shaved with the sample pack from Art of Shaving and honestly loved it. Best shave and post-shave ever. I think the main key was the pre-shave oil, something I have never used. Any recommendations for something similar, affordable, that I should pickup?

I tried the AOS samples when I first started. I don't like the thick oily feel. I tried several other products and have been using this product for 12 months, love it, shaves closer than the AOS did for me, non greasy/oily, no scent, washes off easy.
At Wal Mart for under $4.00.

There are many posts here about how to make your own pre-shave oil. I would recommend looking them over and giving it a try. I've had some good luck creating a pre-shave blend. So much so that my wife has claimed it as her own and said that I need to make another one for me.
I think I only spent about $18 for oils and I have anough to last me a long, long, long time....

I also have used AOS Pre Shave Oil. I do like it, but it is a bit thick. I recently ordered Cade Pre Shave Oil from L'Occitane. I really like the stuff. Much thinner than the AOS stuff.

I've used eShave, and there fairly decent, and smell great, but in the end I stuck with 3P Cream. A small amount is all you need. When the shave is done, your face does not remain oily. (which is why I'm not big on oil)
A quick rinse, and some Witch Hazel and your golden.
If you want to be on the real cheap. You can buy pure Witch Hazel extract at Wal-Mart for $3. Pharmacy section.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, while still on the learning curve I decided to hit up AOS to get something I new worked as I would rather mess around with new stuff once I have it down pat. However, they recommended a new pre-shave gel they had, due largely to the fact it is not nearly as thick or messy.
There was a lot of time in between so I cannot really compare the two accurately (their gel vs. oil), but so far it has done the trick wonderfully, and certainly with a lot less of a mess and hassle. Same price as the oil ($22 here), so not a bargain, but I really like it so far!

Thanked: 109I had been using mineral oil as preshave until MWF. I find the soap has conditioned my skin after a few uses I no longer need to use a preshave. I have been getting good comfortable shaves with no more prep than scrubbing my face with a boar bristle brush full of MWF.
