Thanked: 0Dangerous business
"It's a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you might be swept off to."~Bilbo Baggins~Tolkien
Morning fellows,
I have been browsing this forum for almost a month now and dreaming of shaving with a straight razor. For my birthday two days ago I did, in fact, receive a razor, cup, and strop. Yesterday I used the razor for the first time shaving only from the sideburn to the jaw line as suggested by Lynn. This morning I was a bit excited and attempted to take a run at the majority of the face. I may have nicked myself once but other than that it turned out ok. I missed many spots and know that I have much to learn still but I'm loving where this is going. I do believe that I NEED to get my razor honed; there are many spots that I feel didn't get shaved close enough. Be that as it may, I'm loving this! To wrap this up I'll say how helpful this forum has been to me and how much I still believe I have to learn form it, so thank all of you!
P.S. I'm from the Denver area and am looking for a local honing service/person. If you know any and could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Get you a nice double edge to help smooth out the missed places while you hone your skills (see what I did there?) You will get a great shave while feeling the joy of great shaves!
Way to go and welcome!

Ok, a Tolkien quote on beards:
“O! Where are you going
With beards all a-wagging?
No knowing, no knowing
What brings Mister Baggins,
And Balin and Dwalin
down into the valley
in June
ha! ha!”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
You might say they were headed for a close shave!
Welcome and a belated Happy B-Day! You most definately should be starting with a shave ready razor. I'm not sure about the Denver area, but there are several well respected Homemeisters you can send your razor out for honing listed under the Classified on this site.
Good luck, enjoy, and the best advice is go slow when first learning. Rushing leads to bloodletting.May your lather be moist and slick, the sweep of your razor sure, and your edge always keen!
