Thanked: 0Hi from a new guy
Hi all, new to the forums but have been lurking for a little while. Have a couple shaves under my belt but with some POS thing called a rough rider, after looking around here I'm thinking that it's more of a toy than a razor but I still find it better than a cartridge shave. My first ever non-cartridge shave was soapless with a pocket knife in a natural spring at the top of mountain, that may tell you a lot more about me than anything I could ever type here
Anyways I have a Genco deRoma extra hollow on the way from...yes of course ebay so I will probably get it professionally honed unless it comes looking very nice. Complete with a marvy boar brush, col conk bayrum soap, and a brush/razor stand I bent up out of a coat hanger So if you din't get the picture I'm one of those guys that got pissed at the price of replacement cartridges and am looking for a cheap shave. Even my limited experience with garbage razors/pocket knives (yes you may call me a moron for that) has been rewarding as I have noticed an improvement in the look/feel of my skin after only a week using this rough rider thing. So it only gets better from here, hoping to learn a lot more from all of you.
On another note, I see in your FAQ that B&B razors are not exactly "recommended", anyone have one of their strops? I'm using an old belt right now and its already got nicks in it so I'm definitely looking for cheap but not complete garbage quality.
Edit: and feel free whomever to move this to its proper place sorry.Last edited by Knifeguy; 03-29-2012 at 06:03 AM.

Welcome to SRP.
Nothing wrong with minimalist shaving but nicking even a cheap strop is bad for your edge.
Get some old school practice using a single sheet of newspaper the size of a strop then buy a good strop when the muscle memory is up to par.
It's a lifetime investment if looked after so the cost is justifiable. You can also make your own but need to be able to identify appropriate leather. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Welcome to SRP!
I'm all for minimalist shaving... leaves more razors for me to buy i cheated and looked up that deroma... judging from the rather poor pictures you are going to need to send that out for a polish and honing. you might want to consider a vintage razor from the classified here. or a starter kit... whippeddog has them for about the lowest price... vintage razor + strop for as little as $40 but you want the $55 option. just a thought.

Thanked: 0Yeah the pictures could easily be hiding a lot, as you probably saw I grabbed it for cheap so I definitely have a little left over to invest in a honing from srd or one of the other guys on the forum. I had actually considered making my own strop as leather is easy to acquire, any recommendations for weight? I see a lot of latigo strops and srd has a lot of different ones but never any mention of the weight of the leather.
