You need at least two in case the edge fails on your shaver, you need to have a stand by, but two standbys are an even better idea. That way you're covered for any eventuality.
Also, you're not spending money on razors, you're investing it. Provided you have enough to reduce hone wear to negligible, you'll always be able to sell them off for what you paid (provided you're not buying all new razors) or bequeath them or even just trade them for razors you believe you will prefer to the ones you have. You need at least a couple to try out and figure out what you like.

Thanked: 324Seriously.... don't as me. There's no way I can be unbiased. I tried for a few minutes to arrive at a fair number of razors but everytime I visualized myself with just a few, I got a really sick feeling in my gut. To me one or two of every one ever made would be just about right although I suppose I could be pretty happy with about three for regular shaving ... at least until I went through my collection and pulle dout another three to use for awhile.

Fifteen
Yes, that's right, fifteen razors. Why you may ask? That's how many fit into my barber's box. Any less would disrupt the fragile balance in my life; any more would be in danger of damage because there is no place to store them safely and well.
I will grudgingly agree with Nenad that a single brush is sufficient (providing you have found the right one). For me it is a Chubby #2 made by Simpson's. However, I will vehemently disagree with the proposal that man can live (let alone be happy) with only one scotch. Six maybe, one is simply uncivilized.
Now you have a bit of a glimpse into my somewhat parochial existence .
Cheers,
Ed

I have come up with a scientific formula for determining the number of razors one needs:
However many you can fit inside a standard railway boxcar is usually the answer I come up with.

Two, everything else is just for enjoyment.

1 is a bare minimum.
2 so each blade can rest between shaves
3 to have a spare in case you inadvertently damage one
4 to also have a traveller
5 to have 2 travellers
6 to have a spare, two travellers plus some enjoyment
7 to have a 7-day set
8 to have a 7-day set and a spare
9 to have a 7 day set, a spare and a traveller
10 to have a 7 day set, a spare and 2 travellers
There's always an excuse

Thanked: 1587I received 5, in dribs and drabs, from my father in law. He kept unearthing old family hierlooms in varying states of repair when they moved house. Unfortunate, as my wife saw no reason for me to buy new ones!
However, I devised a cunning and masterful plan which I put into action 2 weeks ago - and it worked! (I was allowed to buy a brand new Henckels from John Crowley.) Ever see those kids throwing a complete tantrum in the supermarket? Well, let's just say it's not a good look on a 36 year old man<This signature intentionally left blank>

Reasons (for the wife) why more razors are cheaper, I have used this one and it has worked lol, of course it doesnt always work.
Basically my collection is mostly made up of very old and/or difficult to replace razors. I have told my wife that every time a razor is sharpened ,metal is ground off of the razor thereby making it smaller, weaker, and less able to stand up over time (ok not entirely tue...I did take some creative liberties). Because many of my razors are hard to find, even though it is expensive to buy them now, their value grows each year, so if I had to replace it down the line I could easily pay twice as much and that doesnt accont for inflation. I also like to throw in the fact that as a razor gains collectability appeal it gains value and will never lose value as long as it remains in good condition, with requires not using it all the time. I explain that this allows me to effectively barter with, or sell one of my razors for a bit of money if needed (the catch is you actually HAVE to at the least trade one every now and then, and yes I took some creative liberties with that line as well). Therefore I need more razors so that I dont over use, destroy, or cause a valuable razor to lose value in case I ever need to sell or trade it.

Thanked: 8My quarter master used to ask me how many mags I wanted. The answer was how many can I have ?.
I had to carry the buggers though which ain't the same for razors.
My sensible answer is..will I use all the ones I have in a timely fashion, coz I want to shave with them. If I have a razor I tend never to use in a rotation then it goes. Unfortunately this leads to me aquiring another to replace it.
I would probably only have 3 or 4 but Bill Ellis and Joe Chandler have too many goodies and it would be just plain rude not to buy one now and again.
