Default New to Straight Razors, Looking for Online Stores

Hey guys, I am interested in getting my first razor, Dovo looks looks like they offer a decent beginners model in the 70-80 range. I wanted to ask if you guys can point me to some good online dealers with good prices etc on razors and accessories. If you think there are other beginner models even more affordable that I should try please fill me in.

I am familiar with sharpening since I am into folder knives, so I have my own sharpmaker set by spyderco and a nice strop loaded with black/green compound on both sides.. basically just want to find a good deal on a razor.

    Thanks!

I think you'll find when it comes to most shaving gear the prices are pretty much the same from place to place. I'm talking new not vintage of course. I would just spend some time here and look around and check out our vendors and buy from a place known for their selection and customer service.

If it's affordability you're after check the classifieds and get a used razor. Otherwise any of the banner ads you see on the site will bring you to a good retailer. The prices are basically the same everywhere for the same equipment I find. The key is, get it shave ready. You can find Dovos in the 70-80 range but they won't be honed. It's worth the extra $20 you typically spend to get one shave ready and most retailers offer a free honing down the road as well for when you mess up the edge which as a newbie they say you will, although I didn't. I haven't honed any razors myself but I hear it's nothing like sharpening a knife. I can sharpen knives well enough to shave with them but I won't even try a razor just yet, don't have the correct stones for one thing.

    Hi eneyman,

Greetings and welcome. The classifieds on this site often have good deals on razors. Another place you might try is www.whippeddog.com; it's run by a SRP member and is dedicated to providing good equipment at very affordable prices. (I don't know the bloke who runs it personally, I'm not a novice and have no financial interest in his business.)

Incidentally, honing a razor is not that difficult, especially if you have experience honing knives. Just remember to use the lightest touch possible to the stone and pastes when finishing up and your razor will shave you well.

    Cheers,
    Jeff
