Thanked: 2shaving up.
I am curious to learn if other men have a similar problem.
the hair on my neck does not grow up or down but from left to right.
any suggestions for this potentially hazardous situation.
so far I stretch the skin, shave down slowly twice, and up once.

Yeah I have the same problem. I'm pretty new, so I'm still working on it. If it aggravates me too much, I clean up the area with my DE. Usually I am able to get a DFS only using my straight. I only pick up the DE if I want BBS on my neck. I can get BBS everywhere else with my straight.

My neck hair grows mostly in the chin to ear direction, so I pull my skin upward and then shave ear-to-chin on the 3rd pass, to make sure I get a nice smooth shave on that section of skin. I haven't perfected this yet, though.

I use a DE razor as of now. Just got into it. Maybe someday with a straight. Anyway, my beard grows from chin to ears as well on my neck. The first time I went ATG it was pretty rough going. After the first time I figured I better go WTG for a few days to get the hang of it. After doing that and XTG I tried ATG again and it was much smoother with very little irritation. An Alum block got rid of that pretty easily.
It may just take a bit of time to work into it. I'm guessing it's more difficult with a straight.

Thanked: 109Mine grows ear to chin. I have been doing XTG. The last few shaves I have developed confidence with both hands and started ATG as I found the skin stretching much simpler. My passes are still somewhat XTG but they are approaching ATG. I find the biggest challenge is the angle of the blade is more critical.

I have the similar problem. So first pass I make wtg, second xtg (from down to up) and then I stretched my skin up so my neck skin now above jaw line and make atg (from right ear to nose). It helps me.

i am the same as foxhill it grows from center out. It just takes practice and some odd faces int he mirror to see how you can get it flat enough for the pass.
2 things that have worked for me.
1) Open your mouth as wide as possible and tuck your chin down towards your chest. This kind of removes your neck altogether.. This allows me to get that shave from ear to adams apple ATG.
2) to shave from right ear in turn your head as far left as you can and tip your head straight back. Reverse to do the opposite side. I do not use this one as much as your confidence in your ability has to be pretty good as your not looking in the mirror at all and completely going my feel and muscle memory. But it does get the area smooth.Last edited by dyimages; 04-10-2012 at 04:44 PM.

Mine grows from the chin down, from the neck up, and from my adam's apple to each side.
So first pass is from the chin down. Second pass from the base of the neck up. Third pass I am still experimenting. I can't find a stroke that gets all of it.
Maybe I'll hone up a spoon and use it for ATG.

Thanked: 11Not sure I can explain this but here's what I do, I have the same issue. Picture my hand just in front of my chin and the razor parallel with my jawbone just starting down the neck. Instead of a straight stroke however down the neck parallel with the jawbone I sweep it. My hand doesn't really move, my fingers do a swipe type of stroke so that the blade ends up just to the side of my adam's apple and almost perpendicular to my jawbone. Picture a chinese fan opening, kinda like that.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Thuktunflishithy, I'm gonna try that tomorrow. I've been having trouble getting BBS on my neck. Have you tried this with a spike point, or just a round point?
