Actually a carbon steel blade is a bit easier to hone, but not by much with newer faster-cutting hones like Norton. The key is to get a quality blade that's made of good hard fine-grained steel and ground properly. If you're buying new, that will cost you anywhere from $60 to $250 for a production piece (more for custom pieces), depending on the size, grind and decorations. If you buy restored from Joe Chandler or Bill Ellis, you can get a restored shave-ready beauty for about $50. The best deal to get you going right away is the $170 starter set from Tony Miller, where you get a good DOVO razor (shave-ready), a hanging strop, a paddle strop (free pasting for SRP members) and some other items that will get you shaving immediately and keep you going.

By the way, there are a few younger guys. I'm 26, Jason's about 22-23, Sean is about the same age as Jason, Larry's 20 IIRC. I like the fact that we have a good mix of ages here.

I'm new here and can only second what so many have already said.
I have a brush and the other things since I have wet shaved for many years but I thought it was time to start using a SR.
I have an old razor that I'm trying to hone, but I went with Tony's good deal for us SRP members. Razor, hanging and paddle strop with pastes.
He was most helpful answering questions and giving advise. This will give me a good razor as reference while I'm learning to hone.
And I was able to get one of the razors that garythepenman had for sale so I can have two in rotation which I guess will give me more time to learn honing
Insured postage from Tony to Mongolia, were I live, is $32 and he said it is almost the same to UK. So for $200 you will get a kit that lasts a lifetime.
I'm looking farward to start to use this X-mas present from my wife

Welcome aboard Mats. Make sure you practice your stropping on the second for a couple of months before switching to the #1. Enjoy the experience. You'll be learning something new all the time.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and help i am at the moment searching the forums and looking for all the tips i can get on my newly found hobbie, I decided to get a razor off Classicshaving and then get it sent to Lynn or someone for a bit of Honing.
I have looked at this one and just wondered if anyone else has used one

DOVO Genuine Ebony, SS 5/8 on Classicshaving ($99)

I am basically looking for a black handled straight that looks and shaves great, do not want to pay anymore than £150 or $300 i think ??

I don't think you will be disappointed with that razor honed by Lynn.

I'm pretty new at this as well, so take this with a grain of salt.

If you have a heavy beard and/or thick whiskers, you might want to go to a 6/8.

I've only been at this for a week, but I have a very heavy beard with tough hair and already know that a heavier razor is going to work better for me - doesn't mean I can't shave with a 5/8, just that I'll be happier with a larger razor.

(Don't worry folks, I'm going to wait until at least next week before moving up to an 8/8 )
