Blade size?
I know that blades come in a variety of widths, but do they come in a variety of lengths? The ones I have are typically around 3" long.
I would like to try a blade with a shorter length.
Why? Being a Newbie, I am concentrating so much on the middle section of the blade (which is in contact with my face) that I tend to nick myself with the tip. A shorter blade would help me overcome this, whilst I am still learning.
I have thought of trying one of the shavette type of straights that take standard razor blades to see if this theory works in practice.
Any thoughts?

Thanked: 1587Hi Frank,
I don't know about blade lengths - all mine are approximately the same length, but I'd hardly call my collection representative of the whole. I'm sure the experts will know, however.
My advice, for what it's worth, would be to keep at it with the normal-length straights. Practicing with shorter blades (if they exist) may well work in the short term, but you'll still have to overcome the length issue at some point, and it might as well be now as later.
I tend to focus on the ends and not the middle when I shave. I figure if the ends are in the right place/angle, the middle will have to follow (but the opposite is certainly not true, as you know).

blades definitely come in different lengths.. i have a 2.5 inch beau brummel and a 2.5 inch Otisco. they are interesting to use. and yes you can tell the difference in length size when you notice the tip/heel touching places you don't want.
however, i would agree you should overcome this and keep using the normal sizes. instead of being afraid of the ends, use them to your advantage... when i do my cheek right up to the side of my lip i use the very heel of the razor which works great, i use the tip when doing under my nose/chin. i use the tip when starting by my ear.
so there are ways to use that to your advantage...soon you will find out what part of your face to use what part of the razor and then it won't even be a thought in your head. you won't bump yourself with the ends as you perfect the correct blade usage for your own face/growth.

I had the same desire for quite a while. What I found, however was that a smiling sway back style razor covers my bases better than I could have imagined and are more readily available. Give one a try.

Most razors are pretty muchnstandard in length. yes there are afew that are maybe a half inch or so shorter like the DD Dwarf but I don't know that the half inch makes that much difference. You could try a traditional japanese razor they are way shorter and require much more skill in using. The only problem is finding one.
