It IS a tradition, but one with real-world use. Besides, it's a little harder to get a cut through a beard. Thus it is preventative and also camouflage.

This is a great thread; I just followed a reference to it from another post. Parker, I bought a razor from Scott a couple of years ago, an unusual grind and a tremendous shaver, and it arrived with a fantastic edge. Also bone scales, like yours.
My stock advice (in fact, maybe I'll put it in a signature line now that they're back) is to use only the pressure it takes to scrape off your shaving lather. With a properly sharp blade, like the one you have or will soon have, that's all the pressure it takes to remove the hair. New folks often put too much pressure on the blade, and that's the road to razor burn.
