Thread: Shavette or not??!!

Crikey!! Thanks for your advice!!!!! What a great forum!! I think I'm going to pay more attention to my prep and shaving technique as advised. I've had a gander at the whipped dog and have decided to invest in a razor and strop kit in a couple of weeks. I think I will persist with my shavette until then and try to reach the goal of a cutless shave!! We can all dream eh??!!!! Another quick question, are the disposable blades I use in my shavette sharper than your average shave ready straight. I was thinking this because of the very thin gauge of steel used in disposable blades. And would this effect the amount of cuts inflicted??

Good on you!!!! A brand new DE blade is normally sharper than your average straight - but the straights can get that sharp. One advantage of using the DE Shavette is that you will be able to learn what "sharp" is. With the Shavette, you will have an easy travel straight as well. The real straights are more forgiving. You did well to look at whippeddog and in the mean time will improve your technique with the Shavette. And yes, the thin blade of the DE increases the chance of cuts, in my experience.

Well I'm pleased to say that my shave with my shavette went pretty well last night, prepped in my usual way and really took my time, concentrating on the angle of the razor and the direction and length of my passes. I was really pleased with the results, geofatboys vids have really helped too. I've been watching straight razor and safety razor demos too to get as good an insight as I can in shaving techniques. My shave was nick free, apart from catching a couple of old nicks my previouse attempts had left behind. My problem is I'm very impatient, I've heard lots of advice saying just start with downward passes on the cheek area, but once I did that and was satisfied with the results in my first shave I couldn't resist carrying on and thats where the trouble started!! I still have trouble along my jawline and round the bottom of my chin, but I took my time round there last night and didn't get too cocky and finished with a cartridge to be on the safe side. Once bitten, twice shy!!! All in all I am pleased with my progress and last nights shave, which was my fourth full shave with a shavette was a really pleasurable and rewarding experience. It sounds silly to say but I wish my beard would grow back quicker so I can practice shaving again!!!

I just bought a Parker SR1 just for fun. Might as well have at least 1 of each. It's neat looking. Haven't tried it yet. Looks a little rough. GeoFatboy shaved with one and it seemed to do a passable job.
