    Default Another Intro

    Hi Guys,

Ive been lurking a few years and finally decided to join SRP. First, I'd like to mention that the information here has been a top notch resource in my endeavours to learn the art of the Str8, thanks. I bought Lynn's DVD a few months back and it has also been a great reference.
The primary thing that brought me to wet shaving (besides an interest in things traditional) is the artistry of the Str8. I have used a safety razor for a year or so and decided within 2 shaves that I would never go back to cartridges if I could avoid it. I even took my Merkur HD to Venezuela with me in July.
Last week I recieved a beautiful 7/8 Revisor in a trade and could not pass up trying a full shave with it. Now I havent had much luck with the 5/8 razors that are in my line up (granted, they still have the factory hone on them) but this Revisor was something else. It was stroped on an heirloom paddle and put to work. I completed the shave and didnt get nicked once. The shave was not super close, but it was good and I was pretty stoked. So there is the motivation for getting on line and signing up here. Looking forward to learning more.

    Best Regards,

    Dave.

Welcome aboard Dave. The factory hone will take forever to turn into shave ready with abrasive pastes. You need to do the rest of your lineup with hones. Check out all of the help files and that will be a lot of help in getting all of your blades shave-ready.

    Default Welcome Dave

Lurking for years, eh? I'll bet you've seen a lot go by. Thanks for saying 'hi', and here's to you getting better shaves all the time. Those factory hone jobs aren't worth shaving with IMHO. Do yourself a favour and get them puin trim and I'll bet they do you every bit as nicely as the new Revisor.

Hello again and thanks for the welcome.

The Norton 4/8 k has been taken out of the toolbox since reading the replys. I figured, all trepidation aside, it was time to learn how to use it. It was soaked in water a good half hour and trued on 600 wet and dry on a glass plate. Then scrubbed with a clean tooth brush under running water to get the 600 grit out of it. A Dovo and Thiers 5/8 were both honed on it. What a difference! It was my first hone and the razors are new so I was cautious, the blades were kept flat, sides alternating and the stone kept wet. They were finished on the Miller double sided paddle (.5 and latigo) Both took me about a half hour.

The difference was pretty remarkeable. A 2nd ever complete straight shave was accomplished this morning with the 5/8 Thiers and it was damn near BBS (one nick.. D'oh! got too confident)

The factory hone on these things must really be just for looks.

    Regards,

    Dave

    Edit- Quick question:

Are the 7/8 Thiers still worth the money? Ive heard that the quality may be slipping recently and it might just as well to get a 7/8 Bartmann if the Thiers arent up to par. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I love my Thiers...I have a 7/8 red stamina and it's just fine. the only thing that let me down was the gold stamping on the blade.
