How are my choices?

Hello all,

I've just won an ebay sale on an 'as new - unused' razor (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=230050615633).

I've already got a 1000x/4000x japanese water stone, and am planning on:

-either an 8000x water stone or ceramic stone
-a double sided leather paddle (one side plain, one side for 0.5micron chromium oxide)

So how is my plan shaping up? Having never shaved with such a beast, am I setting myself up for a bloodbath or the smoothest shave of my life?

Looks pretty good. Sounds like you are on the right track..

It looks like it will take some cleaning up and polishing and expect to spend extra time honing it since it is a stainless blade but as long as it doesn't have any chips in the edge it has great potential. henkels are great shavers. Your plan looks like a winner.

My only reservation is the claim its unused. maybe its the picture but it sure looks used to me.

It looks decent enough.

You'll probably want to get one that's shaveready though just for comparisons. If you're in my area I'll send you a loaner free of charge (only shipping) but if you're not (and that's more likely) maybe someone else can?

I'm not terribly concerned about the truthfullness of the unused claim. Either way I expect it to take a bit of work to get it shaving well.

I am looking for a ready to shave reference razor as well. Its just a matter of time until I come across the one that catches my eye :P

LX_Emergency - thanks for the offer, but I'm nowhere close (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). I think my best bet on a reference razor is to buy another one

Shipping razors costs almost nothing (I had two shipped from the UK airmail for under 2 pounds), so I'd see if you can buy one from one of the many people around here who sell them.

Lynn has some razors for sale around the $40 - 50 mark and if you post a WTB in the right forum, I'm sure someone can hook you up with a shave ready razor for a reasonable price (it will be a good shaver, but might not be much to look at - but who cares if the price is right).

I've just gotten into straight shaving and having a couple of shave-ready razors makes a BIG difference in getting started and learning what a sharp razor feels like.

Just my suggestion.

Yeah, I too think that should work out for you. Just remember, that smaller blade will require a delicate touch on the hone.

Most likely yes. We have a few members in canada here though I don't recall anyone near Edmonton.

But you could try to buy one from another member here. Shipping really is cheap. I ship to the res of the world for around $3,50 or so so I never really bother to include shipping prices when I ask someone to pay. It's just automatically included. That goes for a lot of sellers here though.

And if you WTB one.....I have a few on stock. As do quite a few other people. If you want to get a really nice one get one from Garythepenman or ToxIk or Urleebird or Joechandler...or well..there's tons ot people. I mostly have ugly ones that work but the occasional looker. The others all have razors that are simply amazing looking.
