A Pyrate's First Shave
Well I tested out the equipment today. Only one pass. I will say my left side (dominant side) is as smooth if not a hair smoother than with my Gillette Fusion. The right side has some stubble but barely visible. My neck was done withe the Gillette Fusion. My neck has the standard redness around the adam's apple and patches of invincible stubble that I can never seem to get. I will say as I get more comfortable with my Hart I believe it will be different. When I washed my face off the only parts of my face with the distinct feeling of you cut to far were on my neck. Over all I loved the experience.
I still have a lot to learn. Lathering could be improved. Non-dominant hand needs work. The Aha moment today was when I grasped exactly what short strokes meant. World of difference.Last edited by Pyrateknight; 07-14-2012 at 04:23 PM. Reason: Added picture

Congrats on the first shave. As with all things, it gets better with time and patience.

A year from now, you'll wish you had started today.

Thanked: 3225Congrats, I hope it keeps getting better and better for you. I noticed the same thing when using my non dominate hand, its still not as good as my dominate side but getting there.

As I was driving today I did find one small nick on the right side right at the chin line. Nothing big.

Thanked: 3225They happen, to some of us more frequently that others. Don't kill yourself while driving looking for nicks, I believe the preferred method for that is texting.

Thanked: 443PK--good going on your first shave! I spent about 4 months transitioning from disposables to a full straight shave, and my adam's apple was the last spot to fall. I've been at it for years now, and only this week did I try a new, better pass on my neck. I've always started from the collarline and worked my way up, shaving strokes all downward. But there's a band about four fingers wide, right under my jawline, where the grain reverses and a nicer pass would be upwards. So I took the time and care for that and guess what? The shave was more comfortable AND a little quicker, because I wasn't fighting some of my mug's burliest stubble against the grain any more.
Long story short, there's always something to refine, some new observation to ponder and maybe act on. Enjoy!

Thanked: 0Congrats on your first shave! I have been using a straight for a little over a month now and I am starting to see some consistency in my shaves. It'll be a few steps forward, a few back for a bit but a bad straight razor shave is usually better than a good disposable shave. Keep with it!

Today was my third shave and I am glad to say that I think I figured out my lathering problem. Also no assistance from the cartridge razor this time. A little rough on the neck but getting better.
