I think that the hair shaping blade was not as sharp as the DE blades, and you got away with your technique with it until the DE blade showed you the error of your ways. There are better replaceable blade straights, the Feather SS being my favorite, but the Dovo on its way to you should give you a baseline for what a proper shave should be like.
