The hook is set guys, just gotta reel him in now!
Welcome, Matt and enjoy the ride. To answer your questions:
1) There are so many to choose from it boggles the mind. I'm sure folks will be chiming in to tout their favorites (Momma Bear has great soaps!) but remember that the ultimate test will be using it. Part of the fun in this hobby is finding out what your own preferences are and searching for that "magical mixture" that will perform for you.
2) See number one (Personally, I'm a Witch Hazel guy). Again it will depend on your own preferences. Some tips, though: Most alcohol-based AS will sting, especially if you have a little razor burn or a not-quite-right edge.
Most of all, though.....HAVE FUN!!!Last night, I shot an elephant in my pajamas..........

Matt,
This thread (http://straightrazorpalace.com/soaps...ike-about.html) has great ideas for soaps /creams that people use and their opinions of such.
As for post shave... an Alum block helps along, with minor sting. Then lotion / balm/ both. YMMV.- Jeremy -

1. I am still working on that.
2. I found the white Proraso Aftershave Balm nice and cooling. It doesn't burn with nicks.

Thanked: 1936I personally base all of my soaps that I have used off Proraso. It works well in any water, not all shave soaps do. It's consistent between batches and the new stuff performs as well as the old formula...just smells a little different. This is one soap that I will always keep in the cabinent. I actually try to keep a couple tubs as it's a great gift for someone who shows interest in our sport. Please keep in mind that I have only tested about 50 different shave soaps...
After your shave, an alum block. It is a direct indicator of a poor shave & will help with weepers. If it burns, you didn't do too good a job shaving. If you just move the wet block over your face and just feel your skin tightening...you did a good job shaving. I started using alum to help with razorburn as I am really prone to razorburn on my neck during summer. After I use the alum block, blot to dry with a towel, then I apply a alcohol based aftershave. If you aren't prone to razorburn, you might try some Nivea Post Shave Balm for Sensative skin...good stuff & does NOT burn.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott
