Hello everyone. I have been a DE shaver for a little over two years and loving the fact I no longer have to deal with cartridges. Well I received a Kinfolks Wedge not long after I plunged into DE's as a PIF. I have just started using it in the last two weeks. I must say that I love it! I have only a cheap set-up which is my blade, VDH kit (bowl, brush, soap), alum, no-name aftershave, and an Illinois hanging strop. I have tried a few creams and soaps (Real shave co, CO Bigelow, and a few others that I found locally) But I like the VDH the best. I am hoping to try DR Harris soap soon too.

I have found this place to be of great help and look forward to chatting with everyone.

    Ron

Hello Ron welcome to SRP. You sound to be off on the right foot. It doesn't take a lot of fancy equipment to enjoy the hobby but you will after a time find yourself "needing" more stuff. I don't believe there are many able to avoid buying razors cause they look appealing or are just intriguing not to mention a different kind of strop or stone...........and you already have begun a ride down the slippery slope of shaving soap the dreaded SSOSS aka SoapAcquitionDisorder.

It is a fun ride and It just keeps getting better.
    YMMV

    Hi Ron!!

Sorry I didn't see your post until today, but let me welcome you to straight shaving. I can't tell you how nice the old Kinfolks wedges are, what a great razor to start with. Next you'll have to get yourself a hollow ground and have a variety of sensations.

Check out RazoRock creams, I think for the price (cheap!!) it's a fantastic shave cream. I think Cella is pretty darn good too, and very inexpensive as well. VDH can make a ton of lather if prep'd right. I like to take a shaving off the puck and put it in a touch of water and let it sit for a few hours before I lather it up. It really makes a lot of lather then.

I look forward to more posts on your progress!! and don't forget to ASK Questions!! If we can be of any help, let us..

Thanks for the welcome gentlemen. I do have one question that I i could use and answer for. Does the angle change for some blades? Most of what I have read says about a 30 degree angle, Although I am finding a better shave with close to a 45. When I try to go 30 degrees it does cut some hair but not very close at all. When I go closer to 45 I get hardly no stubble after my first pass. Is this because I have a wedge? Or am I doing something else wrong. Thanks in advance.

I would not worry about the exact angle. If its working for you then your fine. Could be the wedge. But as long as your results are good and no cuts or irritation. One other thing is if the razor is properly honed.

I am not sure if it has been honed properly. When i got it the gentleman said it was shave ready. It will pass the HHT, although I read that is a test for the honemeister and not to determine if it is shave ready. If I stick to my 2 pass shave I get very little to no irritation. Make it a third and that is a whole different story. I am planning on purchasing another razor from SRD so I should be able to compare the shaves.

Nice. What are you looking for at SRD? Wedges have a diff feel when shaving than a full hollow. I think i found it harder to cut myself with a wedge.

Lol, What am I not looking at is easier to say. Mostly looking at the Dovo Bismark, I really like the aesthetics of that one. I am also looking at a Hart 6/8 square point with cocobolo scales from Classic Shaving. Everyone seems to really like the shave quality from Harts, and I am a huge fan of things made in the USA.

Hello Jampods, and welcome. About shave angle--I find I have to use a steeper angle when shaving the denser or stouter whiskers, like under my chin. That's only on the first or second pass, however. A third pass, if I take one, is usually against the grain and requires the blade to be almost flat to my face. That ATG pass also requires a blade in top condition, well honed and stropped. If you're not getting good results on your own, that may be the cause. Try really short, buffing strokes or, as I do, let that third pass slide.

I like the blade shape on the 6/8 Bismarck. That same shape is available on some of the other Dovo models as well; it's another of them that I have. It's one of my favorite shavers.

    Best wishes to you
