First shave, no blood!
My straight finally arrived. A lovely tortoise dovo special, shave ready from the classic edge.
Wow it seems incredibly sharp. Far sharper than grandad's old ones. I have to say, my first straight shave is a lot better than my first DE shave. Less than perfect, but I was pretty conservative and finished with the DE. Places I could get at well like my cheeks have never been smoother. Most of all I'm pleased I didn't maim myself on my first shave. I think experience with a DE helped. I could feel when something was about to go wrong and just stop and move on to the next section. Reading advice on this forum really helped. Thanks all!

That is exactly what you are supposed to do and that's why your experience was a good one. Too often guys rush in and try to do everything the first shave and the result is predictable. Usually blood isn't the issue the first shave it's more serious razor burn. Blood comes later when you become over confident in your skills.

great job and good luck I'm 4 shaves in first real cut at 3rd little blood no real pain. remember the zen of shaving and if the phone rings, dogs bark, toilet flushes, gun fire,UFO lands the blade is still on your face don't turn it!
P.S. i found razor burn is lessened if you shave with your whole arm(shoulder and elbow)keep the wrist straight

I did that years ago in the army. I was in the barracks shaving and some sh*& head yelled my name just to see if I would look.
I did..
I chased him down and he got to bleed just as much as I did.
On the up side though, there was no scar and I learned that valuable lesson....never look at anything else when you're shaving.Through the mud and the blood, to the green fields beyond.

Thanked: 57Getting cut while straight shaving is like dryballing a muzzleloader; there are those that have and those that are going to.

jbtusa, please pardon my ignorance, but what is dryballing a muzzleloader? - our Government won't let us play with guns.
GeoffwithaJ - I don't think you are trying hard enough - you must continue using a straight until one gives you a kiss...hehehe. Every new one I try gives me a little kiss to help us bond in blood
Geoff (with a G)Hang on and enjoy the ride...

Re: First shave, no blood!
for those concerned that I hadn't drawn blood: attempt number 2 "kissed" me good. Maybe even french kissed me. I was going in for my upper lip and caught the end of my nose. Now I have a 1" gash on the bottom of the tip and I have to be at work in and hour. Lesson learned... Careful when approaching your face with a knife sharper than any you've ever held. Otherwise it was an excellent shave!
