Thread: Have you begun to notice how stubbly everybody else is?

And other new things you've noticed since you started _shaving_ your face with a SR or even DE?

I never really knew how to shave before-been hacking whiskers off for most of 30 years. Never understood about multi-passes and grain directions, or even making a nice foam. For 30 years I'd been using soapy water/canned goo and dragging a whatever-plastic-thingy across my face. No one "taught us" to shave because they didn't have to. Nicks, razorburn, aftershave? Never had any idea 'bout those things all these years. Burned my face with my first DE shave. none-since.

Now I know, 30 days into DE shaving , that i never knew diddle about shaving. Now my face is as clean if not cleaner the _day after_ a good shave than it ever was in the plastic years. Noticed most every other man i see has 1-3 day old stubble, just like i used to (i can't wait to shave each day now). Have one pal going down the path with me, and I'm offering loaner DE's, of the least aggressive sort, to my bros who want to learn.

I'm of the generation that saw Dad use a DE, but then things changed before our faces grew fuzz.

Knowing what I do now, I'm sure i could go back and do a better shaving job with a disposable, BUT THAT I much prefer the DE and i've _disposed_ of that way of life for good.

I even touched the SR to my face this morning. It works fine, but I have to get a strop before i start really working with it. Was cleaning up the SR to sell it, but well, here we go! It's going to be reserved for weekend/slow-day learning sessions. I'm still learning lots.

Know one older fellow who still uses his 30's ish-injector type razor. I have one of those too (came in a mixed bag of DE's), but no blades (yet).

We were all sold a bill of goods by Gillette and Shick.

Shaving has been completely "de-skilled" by multi-blade razors. But the tradeoff is that they're expensive, and don't give results as good as the "old" DE / injector / straight razors.

The manufacturers are happy. Shavers -- according to the Wall St Journal piece yesterday -- are not.

I expect that you'll like the injector, when you get some blades for it.

Well I guess I got sucked into the fold as well, sort of, always used a DE, ever since I started shaving 1980ish. But I bought into the canned gel stuff. Now not even 14 days ago i made the switch to SR and shave soap and cream. Shaving was a chore to get out of the way, now I look forward to it. Afterall I have to test out all the new stuff I "have to" buy

I haven't exactly done that, but I have found myself occasionally searching for the telltale nicks of a wet shave on some people.

Not only do I notice, I make a point out of commenting on it as often as I can

My business-partner has actually never shaved himself clean, all he has ever used is an electric beard-trimmer.
He uses that once a week, and every week I comment on his scruffyness towards the end of the work week!
To his credit, he has never given in yet, not even once.

what i never knew was how pathetic a shave i was giving myself all those years-of mostly intermittent shaving.

and dangit now, can't wait for another day of stubble to appear. i'll take a week or two off for deer season-that'll give me some "impressive" stubble to whack with the SR.

You are giving me way too much credit for being interesting...I'm as boring as they come....

A week into my straight shaving journey here and I'm finding that I really want to keep on shaving, mostly because I want to learn and get this down 100%

I notice other stuff too. Today, a street sign said WESTHAVEN. I first read it as WETSHAVEN.
