Thanked: 0Hello with Razor Problems
Hello Guys, I'm 16 and I recently started using a straight razor. I had a pretty sketchy set up though. I have an antique E. Weck Barber Razor (The model was introduced for Barbers around the time when Barbers were required to use straight razors with disposable blades). I am proud to say that I did not have one cut or razor burn, nor any irritation. Good thing that I did not cut myself because the blade is all rusted up and has been sitting in my Grandfather's Garage for about 20 years. But the last time I tried to shave, it did not cut off any of my facial hair. I checked online if there was any extra blades for sale or if the company even existed anymore. Sadly it was a no for both of them. I did run a towel through hot water and put it on my face and I did lather up some soap. I had shaved 3 times previously. I think I might need a strop (Or possibly a new razor?) but I cannot afford any strops. Any suggestions on why it is not cutting, or where to get a cheap strop. Lastly, I must say that those 3 shaves were the best shaves I have ever had. I am really getting into this and was bummed when it didnt work! Any help is greatly apppreciated!
Thanks,
E.S.

Are you serious ? Are you saying , you've been shaving with a rusty , disposable blade straight razor , that hasn't been honed or stropped , and it was sitting in a garage for 20 years ?
If that's true , I think you should start saving your money , for a shave ready razor from the SRP classifieds , and a decent strop . While you're waiting , please read the stickies , and everything else you can , on this forum . There is much you need to learn . For starters , stop shaving with that rusty razor . Get all the rust off , and disinfect it .
Next get a strop . Straight razors need to be stropped every time you use them . There is plenty of info already here on the SRP forum about how to strop , and where you can find a decent , inexpensive strop . Good luck !Last edited by dave5225; 09-12-2012 at 11:50 PM.

I read this and my jaw dropped... Ellshuster, please discontinue using that razor. There is a chance of you getting an infection if you nick yourself. If funds are available a really inexpensive place to get starter kits is whippeddog.com. You can get inexpensive soaps at your local drugstore and "borrow" a coffee cup to use as a lather bowl or just use face lathering.

Maybe you should store Granddads razor for a while and learn on something else, maybe a low cost shavett. When you have figured it out and have the funds put the old razor into service.
