Thanked: 2Hello From TN, USA
Hi everyone,
I have been lingering for a while and finally decided to sign up. I must admit - this has got to be the most helpful community I have ever been witness to.
Whether you know it or not, you all have helped me tremendously in all aspects of shaving. From what to look for in buying, to the correct way to hold a straight.
Thanks again for all the advice in the art of shaving,
Maulgryve

Hello From TN, USA
Welcome!
I'd have to agree, there's some extremely helpful folks around here. The true meaning of Gentlemen.
Have you given it a go yet with a straight?

Thanked: 2Hi ZeroCool, thanks for the welcome.
Yes, I have "tried" to shave with a straight, but it didn't end so smoothly. Apparently, I either did not have the blade sharp enough, or did not prep enough. Admittedly, I was overeager and did not use a hot towel :/ I just went straight to the lather. Needless to say, my whiskers stayed intact. This was before I found this website and the valuable information on preshave prep.
So for now, I am content to use the DE until I have a proper strop, and the time to do a good preshave prep.

Thanked: 443Welcome! What's your razor? Are you honing it yourself? The strop is critical.
I don't use a hot towel, but I shave after my shower and try hard not to let my face dry between the two.

Thanked: 2Hi roughkype,
The razor I was trying to shave with is a Wade & Butcher. I also have bought a J. A. Henckels, and an Anchor Brand.
My grandfather was a barber and my father passed down to me a Columbia Cutlery Co, and a W.R. Case & Sons, which my grandfather used daily.
And I did hone the razor myself, but I do not own a strop yet. So I am pretty sure that is where the problem lies.

Thanked: 443If you send one or two of your razors out for a pro honing, I think you'll have a better sense of how the shave should feel and of how sharp these can be. My first pro honed blade gave me the traction for huge steps forward on both fronts. That Case would be a good one to try--send it to gssixgun.
If you're tight for cash, you can get good starter strops from whippedog.com or ruprazor.com. Or you can fold up newsprint and hang it from a bulldog clip. Stropping really isn't optional.
Put up photos of your razors. We all want to see photos."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

Say Neighbor,
Welcome to SRP. If you have any questions at all about str8 razor shaving this is the place for answers. I have recieve a ton of info in the four years I've been a member. I do most of my own honing, make scales, restore, sell, repair and shave with a str8, about 75% of what I know I learned here. Some fine people are part of this community, all willing to help, all you need do is ask.
Where in TN are you located? I'm in Crossville, about a mile off I40. Shoot me a PM of your location, maybe we can meet up.Last edited by DoughBoy68; 09-19-2012 at 07:26 PM.

Thanked: 2Thanks for the tips roughkype. Here are some pics of what I got. The scales I made out of Box Elder. They will need more attention before I put them on. The anchor razor I have taken the scales off of and almost got them shined up.
And wow it is a small world DoughBoy. I am on the northeastern side of TN. Glad to see another Tennessean shares the straight razor experience

Thanked: 443Those are gorgeous scales. The top set, with the red, and the bottom set, with the black, are all box elder? Are the colors all natural?
Nice looking blades, too!
