Thread: Oiling the blade

Well...I may have just been lucky so far so think I'll be more diligent in oiling. I received a bottle of "razor oil" from a vendor with a purchase. Not sure what it is...mineral oil I think. That's what I've been using on my Hart, and in fact I think I got it with that purchase.

I have several tough cloths that I use on guns and must say, I have noticed rust on a couple of blades I used them on. I even used mineral spirits to "refresh" the tough cloths as recommended. The reason I don't think I would choose to use a tough cloth on a razor is that it is advertised to not come off the item with wiping, so whatever is in the base of tough cloths which is dissolved in the carrier of mineral spirits (as I understand the technology) should still be there on a shave... maybe. If it's not "skin friendly" that could be a problem. Just my contemplating the options. An inquiry to the Marine Sentry Tough Cloth people might clear all that up tho.

Hmmm... That is an interesting observation on the TufCloth. I never knew you were supposed to use Mineral Spirits. I have always used TufGlide dripping it around on the cloth to keep it fresh and ready to go. Never had any rust issues at all even leaving blades gunky for awhile or carrying it in wet clothes. But, the area I live in is pretty dry as well. I have had TufGlide soaked on my hands/fingers for quite awhile working on guns and knives without a problem. And, I have not had any issues with any extra irritation when shaving but that is something interesting to consider and check more into.

I live in Florida & coat the razor every time with Ballistol. Been doing so for the last year and half w/o any problem. I highly recommend this product.

Prahston, I just looked up the TufCloth instructions on their website. They say either TufGlide or mineral spirits to refresh a TufCloth. I have been using mineral spirits because the cloths felt a bit dry and I wanted to avoid more oil (even tho I have a lifetime supply of TufGlide due to an ordering "mishap" several years ago). The website does say TufCloth is non-toxic to the extent that knives wiped with it can be used for food preparation.

@ mumpig... "Lifetime Supply", eh (.. arm slipping around shoulder, handing you an ice cold beverage and guiding you to a comfortable chair...) ever think about putting some in the WTT Section?!

I couldn't find anything negative either. Actually pretty interesting the number of different products people use!
