This link hasn't been updated in a couple months but it's still valid I think. It's got websites to look for gear, what you need when, etc.

The basics are simple. If you want a vintage straight versus new then spend the extra cash and buy from one of the fellows on here. You're more likely to get a really good shave ready razor. Then buy the strops and stuff from Tony.

If you're just wanting a straight versus electric or safety then go with a starter kit.

I'd say to start, buy van der hagen deluxe soap also known as surrey soap. you can get it online at http://www.drugstore.com for about $1.90 u.s. funds per puck.

If you're on a really tight budget and want a cheap starter soap set they sell a "premium" bowl/brush/soap combo for about $11.00.

Be sure to buy Lynn's video also. If you choose to get into restoration then get Bill Ellis' Disk also.

Just my .02 pretax pence .
