Thanked: 247I dropped a razor
This has a very happy ending, but I wanted to share.
I was returning several razors to storage after honing (right after) and I dropped one as I stood there barefoot.
The good news is that my reactions were instant and decisive. I jumped back and out of the way keeping my parts away from harm.
The better news is the razor closed itself on impact as the handle touched down first.
The best news is the room where I store my sharps has thick padded carpet overlain by a thick oriental rug...so nothing took on any damage!
Word to the wide guys, you can buy new razors, you can have damaged carpet replaced, but your body is not that easy to fix if you damage it badly.
Good luck to all. May you never get clumsy...I would have said it would never happen to me, but it did

Re: I dropped a razor
My first instinct had always been to catch. I played catcher in baseball for years, I played goalie in soccer I'm just good at catching things.
But.
I'm also smart enough to realize not to try and catch something sharp and dangerous. That's why when I dropped my best razor last week, I just let her fall. She broke her scales too, but I've got my hands and fingers unscathed. When the Dude is recognized in the world, unDudeness will be seen everywhere--- the Dude de Ching

I would sacrifice a toe for a good razor!

I once met a 9-fingered sword polisher in Tokyo. Years before he dropped a sword he'd just finished for a client & caught it before it landed point first on the concrete floor. When I asked in he regretted losing the finger he said saving any sword would have been worth losing his whole hand.
I don't think I could say that about most razors though....

I know what you mean. My brother recently inherited a katana that his brother-in-law purchased from a museum many years ago. I shutter to contemplate its value. I collect knives and know a thing or two about fine blades. Handmade ancient japanese katanas are off the charts. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity just to handle it. I could not even afford the silk wrappings for the scabbard probably LOL.
