Thanked: 0Newbie in New Jersey
Hey everybody, just wanted to let you know how helpful this forum is. I'm new to straight razors, stropping, honing, etc and have learned alot by reading up on everything here. I got my first straight razor last month (received honed and ready to shave) about a month ago. I used it for almost a month straight before it started tugging, and decided it was time to strop. Well Im not sure what I did, but after stropping it was even duller.
Lucky for me mjsorkin was nice enough to help me out big time today! He honed my razor back to shave ready, and tought me valuable lessons on my stropping technique that will hopefully prevent me from causing future damage.
Thanks again Mike, I greatly appreciate all of your help!

Welcome to SRP Matt!
It was my pleasure to meet you today and to share this hobby with you.
I hope you get a great shave from your razor. It honed up really nice and took a great edge, so you should be set for now.
Keep practicing the stropping. Once you get past the dreaded learning curve you will get many fine shaves from your first razor, and your next, and the next one....
Just enjoy yourself, and have fun learning. It's a great time learning to use a straight for the first time. I'm happy to be a part of your journey on the straight road.
This forum is truly a great place. The resources and brotherhood you will find here are second to none.
Michael

Welcome the SRP Matt. Keep working at the shaves, they will get better and better. Remember, if you feel the razor starting to tug again, Mike is always available to help you out.
On occasion we have a little gathering here in Northern NJ. Please feel free to stop by and meet some of the other members who live in the area.

I know this is an old thread, but I am a new guy in NJ as well. I have a few straight razors, and just ordered a set of Shapton hones from SRD. If anyone in the area (I live near Princeton, but am willing to drive a bit) is willing to show me the ropes with my new hones, it would be greatly appreciated. I am sure I could use some instruction with both my paddle and hanging stops as well. I have been shaving with straights off and on for about a year, and in the last two months, have solely used the straights. I am getting better, but have a long way to go.
