Size: 38.6 KBDang, this place is active, I am in it for the long haul for sure. A little more about the razor, another noob move i bought some cheapy razor from a sally's hair supply shop. One of the ones that you replace the razors. Yeah I know what your thinking... Cheap @ss, so tonight I went to The Art of Shaving at Park Meadows Mall and bought a $100 straight razor. Figure I'd do right this time. Shooter no Styptic pencil. I wish all I had was TP and some Listerene, which burns like hell but stopped the bleeding. The new razor is professionally honed and ready to go, but I am going to let my cheek heal before going at it again. The goatee advice is great, I will be growing it out starting now, as my chin was also bleading pretty good. However when anyone asks what the big cut on my cheek is from I will be stretching the truth a little, Possibly a fight with jungle cat or cougar?

Well, it sounds like your first experience is like a lot of other "first" things in a man's life, maybe not that good, but fun none the less. And of course like all things, the shaves will get better with more practice.

How do you know it was professionally honed if if was just purchased at AOS store? It may be just factory sharp or was it hand honed by someone who knows what they're doing, there is a difference. Once you heal up, try out your new blade and if you have less than stellar results then check out "Member Services" there some members that offer honing services with reasonable rates. Contact them through PM's and you'll soon be on your way to shaving nirvana.

Actually I may have put words in the gals mouth at AOS, She said I would be able to get 2 or 3 shaves out of it before it needed to be stropped, more like it is "shave ready". Probably not so ready, huh? Where do I find the member services? Also the gal there at AOS said the barber would strop my blade and give me a consultation on how to shave and strop the correct way.

    Hey, Joff,

When you first start, its hard know where to look for why its not satisfying - mostly our level of experience. While its easy to get sidetracked by all the bits of controversy, esoterica, when you start, there's just 3 thinks to focus on: The shave itself - see the link on the home page "your first Straight razor shave", Beard prep/making lather - Mantic is hard to beat: How To Build And Apply Traditional Shaving Lather - YouTube
    , and stropping.

You'll spend the next few months learning the detailed topography of your face, and the lay of the beard in particular areas. You'll get to make some funny faces, contorting to get just the right stretch and stroke for each area. Of the 3, maybe the harder topic is stropping. The best thread I've seen so far is Glen's. http://straightrazorpalace.com/begin...ch-2011-a.html This is worth going through many times, making sure you see Al's vids on the all important 'flip' at the end of a stropping stroke.

2-3 shaves w/out stropping. That sound is my face running out the door screaming. But then, when I first started, my stropping sucked SO badly I dulled my edged more often than not. Its a learned skill. You'll get it. Maybe not the first day.

If the blade wasn't professionally honed, or if you roll the edge while stropping, PM me for a touch-up (re-hone) - just pick up shipping. You may find a second blade helpful - so you can keep shaving while one is out being honed. It needn't be a costly blade - just shave-ready.

We'll hear some posts from you soon about how its getting easier, how you're getting GREAT shaves. It'll all be true. Have a blast as you learn.

At the top of the page, under the SRP logo, you'll see some tabs (Forums, Library, etc) click on "Classifieds" one and you'll see the different catagories, click on "Member Services" and you'll see the members who offer honing and other services. I've had razors honed by 3 different members here and they all do fantastic work.

Alright so three days after my chainsaw episode, I've decided to give it a go...and.... Gents not a drop of Blood!!! I slowed way down and really thought about how to move the blade, it was so sweet and Im not sure but Im pretty sure the wiki about lather is spot on. I have never shave with lather so warm and thick ever in my life. It was like the razor was gliding across my face on the stuff from christmas Vacation ( the stuff they put on the sled). ManOman I am loving this straight razor, but still respect for it as well. Thank you to all of you who gave me tips. I also bought a cheap straight off eBay today so that I can lear how to strop with it, and take my nicer blade into get it stropped by a pro. I know that I probably bought a throw away straight but it could teach me a little, right? I dont think my cheeks have been this smooth in my life, I am pumped... Again thaks for all of the suport and tips, and please keep them coming.

We knew the joy would come. You're just gonna love this! Your Mrs/gf/so will notice - that's for sure. Keep posting questions. Loving your shaves is not a crime yet - or most of us would be quite guilty.

Well I only shaved my cheeks and a little bit of my neck, there is a whole different direction past my neck line. But hey not a drop of blood, tood me like 30-45 min to shave but, it was the best time I've spent in front of a mirror in my life. Forget the trash razors of today, I am headed to the past for a better shave then any plastic head could give me. My wife is a little aprehensive but I think since im not gushing this time shes a little more ok with it. Shes not gonna be happy when I tell her Im gonna grow a Moustache for Movember, and so I dont cut my lip off as well.
