Thanked: 0looking to build a set
hey all, im pretty new to SR shaving but i love it. i purchased a dovo6/8 a little while ago but banged the toe on the sink and had to send it to re-hone(also bad stropping). many people told me to purchase a backup(for which i am looking at another dovo 6/8 or a 5/8) but also at the same time, I am looking at maybe purchasing more razors when money is available till i have a full 7 day set. are there many who do this? also what razors should i look into? or is Dovo a legit good brand to last a long time with quality shaves?

I have plenty of razors for 7 days but none of them match. Does that count? I've only seen pics and posts of a few 7 Day Sets and they all have been razors that appear to have been built specifically for that purpose. I'm sure someone can fill you in more on that.
For razors... Dovo is a Brand I'm working my way 'up' to. I'm currently using razors from the Classifieds here or others that I've picked up other places and repaired/honed enough to use. My plan was to start with Vintage razors to try as many variations of steel type, blade shape, handle comp, etc as I could before stepping up and buying newer/better razors or before jumping right in and having custom work done. Of course, the second step in the plan is selling off the Vintage razors I've accumulated but I'm finding that a significant hurdle so far.
You just can't really go wrong with the Classifieds here. There are prices from a few bucks to a few hundred bucks. Some of the Sellers offer Free Honing 'X' times; you just pay shipping. And, like many have said before... "Shave Ready" actually has some meaning other than a sales tactic here... Everyone has different preferences with honing for certain but if it says "Shave Ready" in the Classifieds here then the majority will be able to shave with it.
Here's a link to get you drooling... Scroll down toward the bottom to see some 7 Day Sets:

Oh thats a big question. Dovos are excellent razors, So are Bokers, Wade & Butcher, Joseph Rodgers, and a few hundred or thousand others. Because you are new i would start by trying different makes and different grinds to fine out what you like best before going to a 7 day set.

If they all look alike, how do you know which was the last one you used?

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

I have two mix-matched 7 day sets that I use. By mix-matched I mean each razor is a different one that I restored. I am working on a 3rd set now since I couldn't part with one razor and can't have one odd ball razor in the group. I guess it justifies having to just get more razors.

Thanked: 8I have focused on vintage razors, many from the classifieds here. Out of two dozen acquisitions, have only been disappointed a couple of times (and those were not from SRP classifieds). I have had a chance to practice my honing skills with some successes. I just enjoy exploring different, less common varieties.
