Thanked: 1936Knife sharp and razor sharp are two completely different things my friend. Razor honers start where knife sharp guys are pleased with an edge, literally. Those were great gifts and you should have them properly honed by a straight razor honer and jump into our little world of shaving with a straight, you will never look back once you get the hang of it.

In general, this may be correct. However, I would caution against generalizations about the knife or razor guys/communities.
As an avid member of several knife communities, I and many many others offer edges set and polished to the same level we use on straights. The only real difference between my knife edges and razor edges are the abrasives I choose and the geometry of the bevels.
Further, I have started honing razor for friends in the knife community that were satisfied with their edges but took me up on an offer to hone for free...my findings were that there are straight razor users who use edges lesser than my knife edges and do so happily!
I understand your points and have seen numerous others make similar points, but caution none the less because these generalizations are not always correct.
My point is, there are guys in both the knife and razor communities that keep VERY nice edges....and there are guys that do not.

Thanked: 1936If a knife guy is a razor guy, then I agree & they know the difference. However, if they don't know straight razors, then it's an unfair advantage. There is typically an exception to every rule, but the rule became a rule for a reason.
I'm a knife guy myself, sure did learn a LOT when I became a razor guy. I make more knives than razors...but that's another story...but I use the same steels so that if a knife guy buys one of my knives and wants to maintain a true razors edge...he can if he has the tools and skill.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Agreed.
And in general, you will be best served by demanding that only a truly skilled razor honer work on your razor's edge
