Thanked: 2Need advice on paste
Hi everyone.
I've got my new Dovo hollow ground and have had my first shave with it. Went ok, only managed to do some parts but am aware my angle kept drifting too low.
I'm looking to get the rest of the basic kit and am looking at a dual leather hand strop. I genuinely have no-where to hook a hanging stop (amazing I know, Lol!) and the hand one sounds simpler too. I'll get some Dovo yellow just to keep the yellow side in good nick but am not sure what paste to get for the green side. Dovo Green sounds way to abrasive for a newbie like me, and I don't want to buy the black/red multipack cos I'm only going to use one of them. Seems a total waste or paste. The black sounds best as it's a medium but I can't find anywhere to buy it on it's own.
I aim to keep it in shape by stropping and have it professionally honed once a year maybe. My hair isn't too thick so I hope it's easily doable.
If anyone knows which pastes are best for me as I only anticipate getting one dual siding strop it would be a lot of help.
Thanks guys
Gary

Thanked: 2Here we go. Any thoughts on this one? Do you just apply it to the strop with a cotton cloth?
100g Chromium oxide-Straight Razor strop paste! pigment: Amazon.co.uk: Garden & Outdoors

Hi and welcome!
I am a fan of the Dovo pastes and use them all. Ok, so the Yellow as a treatment for the leather I don't, but I am quite familiar with the green, red, and black.
I don't think the Green is as harsh as you think. As a matter a fact, I had/have a piece of balsa I bought at the local hobby shop that I lapped and used with Green for a long time. Almost religiously - in other words - every shave. That turned out to be overkill, but what I am trying to say is, the leather stropping after using the Green will take away any harshness the Green may or may not give you.
If I were to only have one - it would be the Green. Love the stuff.
I would have no hesitation stating to you to use the green. If you decide against it - don't get the black. If you want to use it to keep your blade in shape - I don't think the black is abrasive enough.
I have been playing with diamond paste too. Talk about effective! But note that unlike Dovo Green Paste - you can REALLY make a harsh edge with the diamond.... YMMV.
Good luck!Last edited by earcutter; 11-18-2012 at 06:38 PM.

Thanked: 2Quite a good point. It is a stainless blade which are meant to be tougher to sharpen. Will consider that too. Annoyingly the strop I want is out of stock. Have just mailed them.
Cheers guys
