Default I did it the knucklehead way (but it worked for me)

I had been wanting to start straight shaving for a while now. I dig the way the shaving feels at the barber when they do your neck with the straight, so I figured straight shaving on the face would be similar. (It's better, those disposable blades aren't stropped.)

So I randomly bought a straight off of ebay (Torrey with nice scales and box, but blade had lots of hone wear) and a vintage hone. And I started sharpening (not by any means honing, just throwing a rough edge on) and testing my sharpening by shaving my whole face (with canned foam) from the get-go. The effect was similar to getting into a knife fight and defending yourself with your face. My wife had plenty of little zingers about my cuts.

I had one of my blades "honed" by some dude who was supposed to be a pro, but I don't think he really knew what the hell he was doing. His results were not that great. (Not anybody on this site)

Luckily, I found out about honing film and using magnification when honing and had produced a usable edge within a couple of weeks. Yesterday, I finally got a great shave with a very smooth and sharp blade of my own honing. My honing and shaving skills finally came together and got me over the hump.

The trick to honing is patience. The trick to shaving is concentration and being relaxed. I cut chucks out of my face to learn those lessons.

Also, I already own 10+ razors. Every time I see something nice at a good price, I am compelled to buy it. Yeesh.

I can quit any time I want. I just need this one razor and my collection is complete. Mostly complete.
