Thanked: 1587Hello and welcome to SRP!
Perhaps the best thing to do is to give you a list of the names of the quality brands currently under manufacture and let you check out which ones fit your price range.
- Dovo - German. The cheapest Dovo (Best Quality) is probably the cheapest new good brand razor out there, though I have not checked recently on that;
- Thiers Issard - French;
- Hart - American and maybe a bit pricey to start;
- Boker - I think they are making new again;
- Others that I have forgotten or are unaware of - hopefully someone else more up on current manufacturers will chime in.
There are also custom manufacturers who will make a razor to your own specifications, or you can choose from their ready-made pieces. However, I doubt you would get away with anything under 400-500 dollars for one at a minimum, so they probably don't fit your criteria.
Good luck!

Thanked: 1587Yes, that looks good. And it is from a good vendor too so you cannot go wrong there IMO.

There's nothing wrong with that Dovo but for the fact that it probably won't come sharp enough for him to use. The whole gift thing will deflate once he realizes that he has to get it sharpened before use. The link you first suggested SHOULDN'T have that problem. I'd buy from a vendor that will deliver a sharpened razor instead of ordering one that will only have to be turned around and sent out the day after its received.

Yes, look for the razor to say professionally sharpened. If it says factory sharpened, it is sharp, but not enough to shave with. Any of the quick links on the site will take you to vendors that are not only trusted, but sell razors ready to go out of the box, no muss, no fuss.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Thanked: 1587Bokers or Dovos from straight razor designs will all come ready to shave, sharpened (honed) by the most celebrated razor honer of our times, Lynn Abrams. Lynn also happens to be the founder of this site. So I would suggest you take a look around that site - you really cannot go wrong with whatever you get from there, and they have razors to suit all budgets.
Of course you can go to other vendors too, and it can pay to shop around. It is just that I know Lynn, and I know he will see you and your husband right.
