I have been wanting to start using a straight razor. I have used an assortment of disposable and cartridge razors and have been less than pleased. This is new to me and I would like input on razor brand, carbon or stainless blade. I see I also need a strop??? What kind and what does it do?? Also any suggestions will be helpful.
I would appreciate any tips and suggestions anyone has.
I live in Mpls, Mn and am also looking for a shop that may have what I need.

I would research research research. Spend a lot of time on this site, all the answers you are looking for are here. Start with the library to the top left hand side of your screen. You will learn that one simply does not run out and buy a razor. There are several factors to consider, in fact you may find that you want to buy two. One for "practice" because you are bound to dull it a bit as you learn to strop, shave, etc, and the other as a backup for when you send the first one off to be honed. There are several quality inexpensive razors out there but you have to be careful because there is even more crap. I would stick to vendors recommended by people on this site or vendors that sponsor this site.

Here is a good site for starters like us Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment . I bought one from here and am VERY happy with it. They are inexpensive but shave ready and of good quality. Once you get further into it, then go out and buy you a nice one that you have had your eye on for a while.
Oh and have fun. Welcome to a new addiction.

Welcome to SRP. There are many razors and strops to pick from. Something of decent quality of course would be best. Here is the SRP beginner's guide and a lot of info in there to chew on. Meanwhile I'm sure you'll get input from members on specific questions. We have a few members in the Twin Cities area so you'll probably hear from some of them as well.
