Greetings from Missouri
Greetings all. I was new a couple of weeks ago. I'm sloooow. I will say that never thinking of shaving with a straight razor to complete fascination of the darn things has happened to me just a few months ago. I have to hand it all to Muskieman33! He has sparked an interest in me I didn't know I had. Being a machinist for a few years I have admired the damascus blades that I have had the fortune to see in your forums. It is just something about old school steel that is just breathtaking. I look forward to viewing and commenting on different postings. By the way. Can someone point me to info on razor making with damascus?
Thanks all , especially to you Muskieman33 you have taught me everything I know about straight razors.

Thanked: 2209Are you interested in making Damascus yourself or taking a piece of Damascus and cutting/grinding a razor?
One of our members, Mike Blue, has made a lot of Damascus and earlier this year had a workshop on it. Here is a link to some Youtube videos of that class............

Well thank you Dad!
However, I don't know that much! I think a place to start would be to using ready made damascus slabs to cut and grind your own razor from, if I'm understanding you correctly. I know there are some sites that sell blank slabs online. Maybe someone in the forge forum has some they would be willing to sell you, or can make an extra slab or two next time they fold some. I would clean up a couple first, at least the two with decent edges before you try grinding on the chipped one. That way you'll know the geometry a little more. Also figuring out if you like full hollow, half hollow, near wedge, or full wedge grinds.
I've got a few different grinds you can test drive to see what you like. I'm guessing something a little bigger with some weight to it so it feels more natural in your meat hooks. Maybe near wedge or quarter-hollow with a 6/8" or larger blade. Here's a video I ran across while I was procrastinating on going to the library the other day.
