Thanked: 4942I normally will recommend that if all you want to do is refresh, then just use either chromium oxide on the back of your webbing strop or .5 diamond on a felt strop. 4-7 light strokes followed by you regular stropping regiment when your razor starts to pull a little. This should keep it going for quite a while. When it quits working, then a finishing stone like the Naniwa 12K is a good choice again 4-7 light X strokes followed bye the paste or spray and then a regular stopping and that should keep you going even longer. A Norton 4K/8K combo is a great choice for getting into honing and actually, it is all I used the first couple years I started honing straight razors.
Have fun.Last edited by Lynn; 12-06-2012 at 01:17 AM.

Thanked: 1I am just looking to start with refreshing the edge, I will look into the pastes. I feel more comfortable working with stones, would a 12000 be a better initial buy for refreshing the edge?

IMO only,,,, yes, but I know absolutely nothing of pastes, I only use stones. If you can afford it, get the 12K.
Getting a smooth shave off an 8K is not something that happens overnight,,,,actually honing any razor, with any stone, to a shave ready status, is not learned overnight.
,,,,,but the journey is a fun one.
