1st Hone Alone

Howdy All
I just received, from SRD, my 1st Norton 4000/8000, a Naniwa 12000 and a DMT 8C. I will attempt to Lap the Norton and Naniwa. Would you please advise me on honing my DOVO BEST QUALITY? It came unopened and needs to be honed better. It does shave, just not very well. I have watched Lynn's DVD and several videos. I think the bevel is set but the blade is not as shave ready as it should be. This will be my 1st attempt at this.

My 2 cents;
I hone from the top down with a new razor, good bevel, meaning I will start with a light workout on a finisher, test shave it, then decide if I need to go up through the 4/8 & back to the finisher. I have found several of my razors just needed a finishing stone & stropping to get a smooth shave.

Im new to honing myself, but if I were you I would watch every video out there by Gssixgun and Lynn before you get started. That being said I have been getting some "shave ready" razors from ebay that are actually pretty damn close but not quite there and have only used the 8k and finishing stone and got it to where it needed to be. I would really watch as many videos as you can. If I were you, and I am not, I would get a cheaper razor that is used and shave ready first and send your dovo out to be professionally honed. You can then shave with it while your Dovo is off being professionally sharpened. When the Dovo gets back then you can use the other one for honing practice. Just my advice.

Give your Dovo a shot on the Naniwa 12000 you just bought, after you study the honing section. Take your time.

Oh I thought he meant his stones came from SRD. Yea lol if the razor is from SRD you have nothing to worry about and they should be nowhere near a hone for a long time.

Find a honing mentor, where are you from? That section under your member information really helps us to offer help. You can put just your town/city or one near-by.

I appriciate your input very much. I got the DOVO from Ebay. The stones are from SRD. Again thank you all for the great information.

There are quite a few Californian's on here, hit one of them up that lives within driving distance for some honing lessons. YOu will learn more in a few hours than you will in weeks/months reading. Lastly, a reference razor honed by a honing veteran is something very handy to have...have the honer to hone/finish with the same stones you have.
