First "Shave" & meet with a member!
Hey everyone,
I got myself a nice straight razor set in the mail today and got to take it for a test run! It's a new C-Mon Dovo razor (I'll post some pictures of it up later when I have access to my camera), and it came out of the box shave ready. I worked the lather as best as I could with the brush and put the lather on, and then came the moment of truth. Admittedly, I wasn't able to get anything great out of it, but I did manage to avoid giving myself any nicks!
I was also able to meet up with a fellow member, TrilliumLT, who was nearby. I've got nothing but great things to say! He gave me tons of tips and showed me (some) of his collection. He even brought his strop and gave my razor a free sharpening. We also got the attention of some of the locals, one old man was with his wife and came up and took an interest in the razors, which was pretty cool! The best part for me though was knowing that, within my area, there is a collection of people willing to help others get into straight razor shaving! I was even told that if I wanted to check out a different kind of razor eventually, I could get one sharpened up to take for a shave to see what I think before buying a similar model!
I've only got my razor today, but I'm already excited about tomorrow, when I'll get another chance at giving myself a straight razor shave!
To anyone still reading my post, cheers!

It was good to meet you John. Hopefully your next shave will go better than the test run. I didnt sharpen your razor i only stropped it for you. Did you pick up the pre-shave and glycerin?

New Shavers: this is big. You can learn alot in very little time, often coming away w/ additional or improved techniques & sometimes a new edge or two.
'Hope every new guy is able to do likewise. It helps SO much. Thank You, Trillium, for your kindness.
To you new guys in the Portland, OR area. C'mon over.

Is anyone in New England? I have shaved with disposable straights over the years but mostly I only would tape up with it. I just received my TI Horn and Aos Kit and strop. I wish I was connected with locals to show me the ropes. I and going to buy a old straight so I can learn how to hone. I do not want to ruin this new blade on the TI Horn. Hope someone can help me.

I managed to get all the supplies you suggested Colin.
For any other newbies who may be checking this, the recommended items were:
Proraso pre-shave cream (Works and smells great, very nice to have worked in before the shave!)
Styptic Pencil (For any nicks, which I have had now.)
Glycerin (To add to the shaving soap as you make your lather. This helps keep skin moisturized during your shave)
Gillette Lotion Aftershave (Because the alum block makes me curse like a sailor.)
My shave today seemed better than the one I had yesterday, but still nowhere near as close as I'd like. Obviously, I'm sure my technique was largely responsible, but the good news is that I'm not being as tentative with the blade & I've been able to get my lather working up much better. The Castle Forbes shave cream you lent lathers brilliantly, I may have to get myself some once the supply you gave is finished!
Cheers!

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.
