An even bevel is important, however, it is more important that the bevel be set correctly. When setting a bevel I use slurry on a 1K and the circle method followed by X strokes (diluting the slurry every 5-10 laps) until the edge 'grabs' evenly along its entire length when dragged across a wet thumbnail, using only the weight of the blade.

Then I know that the bevel is set, and I do about 5 very light laps to restore any damage the TNT does to the edge. At this stage you should be able to pop arm hair with no pressure (if you can't - do a few more laps on the 1K until you can)

I'm planning to visit IOM one day (I want to ride the track) so I'll be able to show you how - but you'll be good at it by the time I get there....
Hang on and enjoy the ride...

Either way works for me - met some guys that had done it a couple of years ago at Phillip Island - most fun they'd had with their clothes on, they reckon

If you are using the TNT/thumbnail test you are dulling your razor. MY advice is to peruse the classifieds and have a pro do it. There is just too much info to post in a reply.

3 - 8 is a bit of a jump, I've got the same naniwa 1 3 8 setup coming and the advice that I was given was to really do a good job on the 3 before moving to the 8, which sounds logical to me. I will post links to youtube vids that were helpful for me in understanding the sharpness tests

(part of a 10 part series it's not bad explanations about edge theory with pictures too)

Straight Razor Sharp Tests - YouTube

and the wiki is also full of useful info I could spend a whole year in there.
