My advice is always the same. Don't rush things, technique will develop easily the more you shave. Don't even worry about a close shave at this point. This is one of those "ask me how I know" pieces of advice.
I tried for a close shave from the start and burned my face up - no cuts though. Sounds like you're doing great, better than myself at the same point. Concentrate on technique and safety.
You're right about not wanting to get water on the scales or pivot. Some use a damp wash cloth or sponge to clear their blade of shaving cream. I just carefully rinse with a small stream of water on a downward pointing blade.
I wipe my blades after shaving, rinsing and drying with a cloth applicator saturated with Camellia oil, but I'm paranoid that way.

Thanked: 1I use a silicon treated cotton sleeve to keep my razor in when not in use, peace of mind for a few bucks while not fussing with oil after every shave. You can buy them here...scroll down after clicking on the link.

Thanked: 1184Sounds like you got the right approach. Go for a little at a time. Always pay attention to what your doing. Soon you will hear and feel when you have the right angle/position for each part of your face. Every time I got a cat scratch it was from watching my position and forgetting the angle of the blade. Do you have the accessories to go with that nice razor ? Soap ,brush, strop, Styptic pencil ?
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
