    Default Six shaves in!

    Hey all,

To be honest I don't know which category this should be in as it's a mish mash of subjects.

So I had my sixth shave today (yeah not really a milestone is it lol) and I had decided to try it with cold water as the article in the 'Pre Shave Prep' category suggested and to be honest it was a pretty good shave.
I recently honed my Torrey 'Old English' razor (Sorry I really don't know anything about it or how to find out info on it, any info would be great) which I got from eBay, it had absolutely no edge on it when I got it so it was an experience putting one on seen as I am new to honing and I got a bevel on it which is primarily even (there is a spot on both sides where its wider than the rest) but it shaved surprisingly well. I only did 2 passes one WTG and one ATG well 3 under my chin because that's always been a difficult spot even with disposables and I got about 75% BBS which I don't think is too bad for a new guy and its probably my technique that's holding that back.

Would you guys recommend I go back to the hones and attempt to get the bevel even on it or is the fact that its shaving nicely good enough?

I have a few other razors which need to be restored so hopefully my honing will improve and i'll get some quality razors in my collection.

I plan to put some new scales on my Torrey as I don't really like the black celluloid ones currently on it (nothing against them just not to my personal taste)

Not sure if any of this made any sense what so ever but I hope it did,

    Mike

It sounds like it shaves similar to other razors you've used in the past, so I suggest you not mess with it. You need a baseline blade, honed by a pro. Otherwise you'll never know. You might sort of just read the replies that the other thousand guys that ask the same question get, and see what you think. Ultimately any razor is either perfect or totally screwed up. There is no middle ground.

The only test that really matters is the shave test. If you're happy with how it shaves, it's sharp enough. If in doubt, do as AFDavis11 suggests: get another razor honed by a pro to use as a reference. If it shaves the same as the one you honed you done good! If not, you know you need to go back and do some work.

Yeah it's about the same as the Dovo I got from Classic Edge but it doesn't seem as sharp as that one which seems odd. I have a razor out to be honed professionally right now so i'll wait till that one gets back to mess with any other razor I have.
