    Excellent choice.

Yes, it is really simple to ruin a brand new blade. Also, you want to get it professionally honed the first time, that way you can use it as a benchmark for what a good cutting razor feels like.

Good Luck and definitely let us know how it goes after you get the blade honed.

I've bought myself a hone from the invisible edge, and also got in touch with Steve to see if he can get it honed professionally for me to start. Is it easy to ruin a blade when trying it yourself for the first time? I want to learn but at the same time don't really want to have to buy a new one.

honing is a skill that develops over time and repition and correcting your mistakes... it is better IMHO to learn on cheap vintage razors than expensive new ones. touching up a sharp blade is way easier than making a dull one sharp.
I would agree with that 100 percent. Been there and done that making it less shave able than before it had a go at it when learning to hone. Took a while but I am finally getting there after lots of frustration.

If you have the $ to spend pick up a ebay razor and practice honing on something you wouldn't mind ruining.
I am doing this presently and I am getting better every time. Learning curve gets you. I don't think anyone can
try and hone for the first time and land it correctly. I have watched dozens of videos and keep learning.
I started with The Norton 4/8k combo and then bought others like the king combo 1k/250 which I do not use.
I am getting amazing results with just the norton combo and the Videos from the Hone Kings.
    Enjoy.
