I'm now 9 shaves in with my shavette (can't afford a normal straight & don't want to bother with stropping). I'm still cutting myself a lot - although only in problem areas: upper lip, chin and when I go across neck. I'm also very sore for a few hours after shaving.

Honestly, unless it gets better and I can do this without soreness & cuts, then I should go back to my mach 3. It gave me a good shave, but wasn't as much fun to use! It also never left me sore.

Tell me it does get better!

It's your technique, and your blade angle. Shavettes are harder to learn on because they are very unforgiving. You will get through it, if ou just keep playing with the angle and pressure on your face. It does get better though, it will feel better than your Mach after conditioning your face to the different type of shaving.

it sounds like you might be using a little too much pressure and too much of a blade angle.

    practice will make it better

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to use no pressure. On my cheeks, jawline & the first pass on my neck there are no cuts. I will experiment with angle though.

Not sure if you can see it from the pictures, but my face is really red!

try starting with the blade laying nearly flat on your face and work form there. if the angle is too shallow little or no beard will be cut, too steep and you have a new dueling scar.

witch hazel, trumpers skin food or if you want a wake up call.... alcohol based after shave after the string the red will start to subsude... the first two though will hardly sting but will be good for the irritation

Have you thought about trying different blades?

Have thought about it, but, again, money is a factor. Currently using Astra, which I was led to believe are pretty good.

My face used to get like yours as well all irritated and red like that. Use a lot less pressure and switch up your angles, it worked for me. To tamp down the redness I used a nice bay rum aftershave- it stings like hell but it worked real well for me. I stuck with it and now I'm about 30-35 shaves in and I see a big turnaround! Stay with it- it def gets better!

Also try getting a regular straight which is a lot more forgiving. Check out whipped dog- they sell reliable straights real cheap. They may not be the prettiest razors as they're sight unseen but they're honed up well!
