Which would you choose?
Hi all. I am about to acquire a razor. And i have two options.
One artisan, or S&Wesson.
Probably the S&W is chinese, dont know yet.
I already read this= http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...th-wesson.html
For the other hand the artisan offers:
The blade is hand forged, with 1095 and 15N20 high and low carbon steel
with over 200 layers. The blade is up to 58 HRC.
So, which would you choose?
[these are my only two options 4now]
Thanks
LM.

Any reason why you have it down to these two? I would cross the S&W off your list as it is prolly a shelf piece and not for functional use. If you want a razor for cheap just look on the classifieds or do one of those sight unseen deals. Cheap, usable, practical.
It's just corn syrup... Warm, blood flavored, corn syrup ...

Lemat,
I would not recommend either razor. What I did was to find a razor on this site. It was honed by a recommended honemaster and it has worked out well for me. I recommend the SRP sellers as the best. I hope that what ever you choose that it works out well for you. Good luck.

I don't know anything about the artisan blade you're interested in but if its all of that, it probably comes in at a high dollar amount. If this is your first razor, I would recommend spending less than what I assume is the asking price. If its your first razor, you don't know if you'll stick with it or if what you're buying is going to suit your preferences later on. Don't over commit yourself. Stick to either known names or Solingen blades until you gain some greater understanding of what you want. As others have suggested, the member sales here is an excellent place to buy a good one that's probably in shave ready condition. I'd stay away from the S&W unless you want a letter opener. Is there a budget you need to stick to?

Ok
Hello all. Thanks for your replies.
As i wrote before, those are my two options, not because budget, cause location location location.
Im not in the US now, so i have to stick with the things available where I am.
I got two options:
If im going for brand, yes, no problem, Solingen and others. The things is: are really old, antik, all oxidized and/or chopped.
So if i go for brand, i will expend 200 uss, and then another 200 uss for a new blade, going to a blademaster o some blacksmith.
In this case, wont be a letter opener, ll be a paperweight jajaja.
'd if cuts, is because I put a new blade ¬¬
So i go for new.
And here dont import Dovo, etc... and my options are, that british artisan, or S&W.
Anyway. All made it clear that I do not buy that, so i will go to artisan then. I dont know too much about metals and alloys, but he seems a truly artisan.
Extra info: yes, is my first one. But i wantit to cut, not shelf.
Thanks again to all
You can still reply anythiing!
Byesss.

Hello again.
Anyone know the brand: Surewin ?
Specs: stainless steel and aluminum handle worked.
USS: $142.
By the way, the artisan publishes his razor as damascus steel.
But in deed, specs said: high and low carbon steel with over 200 layers.
Anyone know why ? imitation, right ?
Thanks again.
Best regards.
