mineral oil ... no need for anything fancy and it is just fine for horn scales as well.

the reason people recommend non-petroleum based products is that if you do not clean them off well many of them will irritate the skin when shaving

I have been polishing mine with Nu Finish polymer car polish. I move them out of the bathroom, so I don't need to oil. It keeps the water from wetting the surface, it just beads up a runs off.
One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

Baby oil is just pure mineral oil so I suspect that allergies aren't the problem, unless you're using oil from you car or some other mineral oil with additives. Some older plastics are slowly attacked by petroleum products, though, as Lemur suggested.

Silicone oil, anything with petrolium products will eat away at rubber and plastics.
