OK so I used 2000k snad paper and shaved.....
OK… So I am over eager and or Nuts, well I know I am a bit crazy or I would have gone insane a long time ago with five kids.
Any way I have been ready to take the leap and head from my disposable blade straight to real steel.
I was out shopping for the misses’ birthday and valentines gifts and low and behold what did I find but a nice J.A. Henckel’s 401 (see below).
The bevel was good out of the box (literally although not the right boxL).one small ding (looks like it was bumped into something)
on the front cross section of the steel and a few minor scuffs on one side of the scales But for $7 I could not argue.
A little polish and walah
So my stones are on the way, and I have been reading about “the Bevel” being set as the sharpness of the blade.
So I deicided to do few light passes on my king 1k (5 to be exact), a few strokes on some 2000p, that’s right paper wetted down to my counter top (20 passes).
Stropped it on a buck skin strap that I picked out and I cut out of some hides I have here (brain tanned) 100 passes and did the deed.
It was as comfortable a shave as my disposable when I am saying to myself” I need to change the blade before I shave again”.
It did take me a moment to correct the angle as it is slightly different than what is needed for the disposable blade straight.
All in all 2 passes, no irritation to speak of.
Prep was
10 min. shower
pre and post shave oil (homemade blend of grape seed, olive oil, aloe, and clove oil)
Williams soap.
I think I will have at it again and ready myself for when my stones get here.
Cheers and Happy Shaving.
Pat

Well I just got done with round two like this, first one was last night. A touch of irritation on my left side
(I think I am having a little trouble retraining the left hand for a slightly different angle).
But here is the shave (I did get one small nick also new to the square point).

Thanked: 26I'm convinced that if I knew of a prep that was good enough I could shave with a butter knife. That's certainly at least half of it.
