Default Suggestion for a larger blade

I've been doing this now for 40 days or so. Enough time to say I am sold on SR shaving from here on. I now own two 6/8 Dovo SR and I like the weight, feel and balance of them. I'd like to venture and try a larger blade, possibly a 7/8, possibly a custom made one. Any suggestions about where to look for one? I wouldn't want to spend over $400 since I still have a lifetime to collect straight razors.

I would take a look at Brian Brown Custom Straight Razors I've got two straights from him and I'm totally sold. Not only are they eye candy the shave is just something else.

$400 will barely get you into custom territory. Look for vintage pieces. I think that is your best bet. Check out our classifieds and our vendors too.

But it will get you in the custom door. That's just a example.. G10 scales with a blood stone wedge 8/8 and a 15/16 Rosewood

For new production razors you could check them out here Rasiermesser and also check the rarities section for vintage blades. Don't forget Thiers and Issard (TI) razors for new production razors.

+1 for the Hart. If you're looking for weight you will get a great piece of steel for a lot less than $400. If you want aesthetics then TI is a good choice, but I think most are full hollow ground which will be lighter than the Hart.

Edit: TI does do ΒΌ ground razors, I haven't seen one online, but they do make them.

I (no offense) don't believe you have the knowledge to really "know" what you want yet, so I actually won't recommend a custom right now. Do you even know if you like a big blade? You like full, half, or quarter hollows? What I do recommend is looking at & trying some of the commercial blades of various sizes & grinds as they are more affordable.

Where in TX are you at? If you are around my neck of the woods, north of Paris, then bring a beard and everything else but a blade & you can sample everything from 8/8 to 4/8.
