    Default Greetings all!!

Hello all. I just bought a Feather double edge safety razor. I am 45 years old and remember my Grandfather shaving with a safety razor until he got to shakey and he switched to electric. Anyway, I've always used disposable. I just shaved with it tonight and got a neck burn from it and it kind of bled a little in spots. I didn't nick,I know what that feels like. Is this normal just starting and getting your face trained to the safety razor? If so,about how long will it take for your face to grow accustomed to the new razor? If not, what are some things I can do to prevent this?

    Thanks in advance

No presure is the key, let the razor do the work. As far as your skin goes, everybody is different but for me it was about 2months.

+1 on the no pressure. I ran into these same problems with my DE. I had little bloody spots and a burning sensation. You can't bear down on a DE like you can with a cartridge razor. You may find that you need to do multiple passes (With, across, and against the grain) to get a super smooth shave. Welcome and good luck.

Well, yes, your face Will adept to traditional wet shaving. But first you need to learn hos too shave (takes a while) + no pressure (paramount). Feather razors also are a bit aggressive, to start with, I think. Good luck and have Fun!

What's the best pre shave method? I feel silly asking this at 45 years old. You'd think I would know this.

As for pre-shave, I use Proraso. I have used both kinds, but have grown to prefer the green tea and oat formula. If you're a fan of menthol, then go for that one. There are other aspects to an enjoyable shave that you have not mentioned. What lather are you using? Which Feather razor are you using? Are you using Feather blades? Determining the razor and blade combination you prefer is usually a matter of trial and error. Is the skin on you face and neck smooth? If yes, you have a wide range of razors to choose from. If not, then SB razors, especially if they have wide gaps between the blade and bar, are going to be harder to use. The quality of your lather is a factor. Do you shower before you shave? So many things to explore, but finding what works for you is part of the fun.
The tale is doon, and God save al the rowte!

    Here are some resources:

    Wiki: http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi...zor_Place_Wiki

Specifically this section from the wiki: http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi...ur_preparation

Thread of guys sharing their pre-shave preps: http://straightrazorpalace.com/pre-s...e-routine.html

Video of one mans shave prep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwIP9...e_gdata_player

This is a starting place. Read through and pick one to try out and see how it works. This is one of the fun parts of shaving, you get to experiment and see what works best for you. Have fun and report back which is your favorite.

I use Feather blades also, but I would suggest you get a blade sample pack from one of the vendors so you can see how much difference the blade makes and possibly find one you prefer to Feather.

I would also recommend moving from anything in a can to learning how to build a good lather. It takes some practice.

Be patient. Go slow. Take small strokes (about an inch or so at a time). Read the wiki and look at the Shaving Techniques forum.
I use to use a mug, brush and soap. Guess I thought can would be easier. Just had s thought. I use African Black Soap to bathe. It works up the best lather I have ever seen. Plus it moisturizes great with the natural oils. I'm going to try it tonight and I'll let you know my findings.
