The irritation can be helped by using an aftershave or even a moisturizer. Essentially with a straight and shavette you are putting a razor blade directly on the skin and shaving it which will cause some irritation without being properly cared for. This includes pre shaving and post shaving.

The gold may come off a little bit depending on how far down it goes. But it won't be bad. You can also use electric tape while honing to avoid this.
Thanks so much for your reply. I use both pre-oil and after shave every time when I shave so it might be the amount of pressure I use. I might want to just go to the straight razor then if it's a whole lot different than using blades.
