Thread: Bought a Feather Razor

I'm a newbie. I like wet shaving with safety razors but yesterday I took the plunge. I ordered a Feather razor. I thought that since less of the blade is exposed it would be safer. I was reading a post here that was talking about how this razor is feared. Did I make a mistake, am I going to kill myself with it !?!?!? Please comment.

The disposable blade is less forgiving than the permanent blade. Several users on here have learned on feathers and have good things to say about them. I'd suggest you exercise extreme caution and go lightly. Tis better to have to shave again than get a skin graft .

The feather can give you a good shave. However, it doesn't really shave like a straight - most of the guys that are happy with it tend to lay the holder flat or nearly flat on their face or and shave like that.

I've tried both and I prefer straights. Now what you want to remember at all times is NO PRESSURE. That's how you'll keep your face nick-free.

I started my straight razor career with a feather also. I didnt take the time to learn the razor and cut myself up pretty good. The razor requires more focus that with a regular straight (in my limited experience anyhow). Using too much pressure and too much blade angle is a recipe for a cut up face. I had a pretty good shave with it the first time I used it, but got sloppy the second and third times and paid the price.

Get yourself a cheapy straight and have one of the experts here hone it up for you. I've shaved twice with mine now and the experience is "much" more enjoyable. Mine is a lot more forgiving than the feather (important for a beginner like me).
