    Default Razor for Honing Practice

What do you guys think? Is this a good razor to practice honing with? Would it be worth restoring by someone on the forum if it takes a good edge? Appreciate the input.

Slightly heavy hone ware, getting heavier on the toe but it looks just fine. You will need to use rolling x strokes but not to bad.

As to restoring I would leave it alone other than honing with tape. Well maybe a light cleaning.

    Enjoy

Thanks so much for the advice. Any tips on cleaning? I saw the post with all the different compounds and sanding and what not, but it's a lot to absorb for a beginner with no experience.

    Thanks again

Well he does not necessarily have to use rolling X-strokes.
The point of the exercise is to learn how to hone, he should try a variety of strokes to see what works and what does not work.

@OP use a magic marker to figure out the stroke that gets the entire bevel in contact with the hone.
Apart from the correct pressure to use, figuring out the correct stroke or combo of strokes is the other very important part of honing.
The razor looks good for practice.

That razor looks to need nothing besides perhaps a good cleaning, some Metal Polish, a rag, you, and a Boring TV show..

Would this be the Black emery, white rogue, green stainless and then finally CrO polishing progression you suggest in another thread or some MAAS polish and something else?? Thanks in advance for the help!!!

MAAS is really good, Flitz and SimiChrome are also right up there, myself I use Blue Magic in the shoip and MAAS in the house..

That razor looks fine (in the pics) I don't see any reason to spin it up on the buffers..

Thanks!!! I ordered the MAAS and it should be here this week some time. I'll shine her up and see how she does. I'll try to post some pics too if anyone here is interested in seeing the results of some MAAS, a rag, and a little elbow grease.

    Default Razor for Honing Practice

How long do you typically have to polish for MAAS to really start taking effect. And at what point do you give up? Lol

30 seconds to 2 hours It all depends on the condition of the razor. If it has been sanded to 2k or better I would expect about 10 min. If you are trying to evaluate the condition of the razor less than 2 min, to have a good idea of where to go from there.
