Default Thiers-Issard Special C. Straight Razor 5/8 Ebony

I just wanted to know people's thoughts on this razor. I know Thiers-Issard is considered a good brand, but does anyone own this one specifically?

It might be cheesy, but something about it appeals to me. I really like the way it looks, and was pondering it over a Dovo when it comes to making a new purchase.

    Thoughts?

This was my first razor. I like the weight and half hollow grind versus the lighter full hollow I got as a second razor. The scales are kind of cheap and the pivot is a bit stiff, but the blade itself is really nice, and shaves great.

    Patrick,

I have shaved with one for a number of years, and like the other C135 TI razors I have, it is an excellent shaver.

Due to the hardness of the steel, it may take a little while to dial in, but once there, they hold their edges nicely

    Good luck !

    Have fun !

    Best regards

I have one myself and love it. It's a great shaver.

I have tried and previously owned both the 5/8 and 6/8 versions of this razor. They are both fine shavers. I personally prefer the 5/8 as the blade feels stiffer and is more nimble.

Despite being advertised as a half hollow, you really get that "spreading on burnt toast" sound when shaving with them. I suppose the level of hollowness is relative from one manufacturer to the other.

    Hello,

I see that you are from Ottawa and that you are using a ClassicEdge.ca picture, so I assume that you will be ordering from them. I got the same razor from them two months ago and I have yet to use it, so I won't pretend to know how it shaves. But, here's my two cents so far. First, you won't be disappointed by ordering from ClassicEdge. Second, unless you already know how to properly hone (or plan on learning to do so, this is my case), go ahead and ask Phil to make it shave ready (it's free, so there's almost no excuses not to). I specifically asked Phil for the factory edge (my excuse: I'm going to use it to learn honing) and, to be honest, I was not impressed. Not only was it not even near shave ready (wouldn't even pop arm-hair near the skin), but the edge wasn't even straight (i.e. half the blade is kind of smiling and the other half is kind of frowning... slightly... kind of.. if you see what I mean). However, don't go thinking that this is TI's standard level of "sharp" or "straight". The TI 6/8 Singing I got at the same time, also with the factory edge, was as straight as it can be, popped arm-air without trouble and gave me 3-4 decent shaves without even going to the strop.

On the subject of scales, yes the original plastic scales are cheap (replacements from TI are about 13$, which tells you that much), but you can always have them replaced, either by Phil or by a member here.

Other than that, the blade looks/feels/handles great and I'm sure I'll be happy with it once it's shave ready.

    Cheers.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I figured the scales would be easy enough to replace at some point anyway, so really the quality of the blade is what I'm looking for. I'll definitely get it shave ready, I'm going to find an older razor to practice my honing on first.
