Dovo, Thieres Issard, and Boker make great razors for reasonable coin. You can find any of these brands in kits from the vendors here.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

There are many good choices; if we knew a rough budget it would be helpful.
Many people that start will change blade preference later,
Whipped dog has good reviews here and an affordable setup to start with,
Including a strop you will not be torn up about over nicking as you learn.

Thanked: 4My first razor was a Dovo Best Quality, it was fantastic when i was first starting. It is on the cheap end too, going for around 90$ if im not mistaken. Straight Razor Designs might have some great Razor + Strop Deals. Best of luck and Welcome to SRP

Thank yal! I've been looking on vintage straight razors LLC . Seems to be the only place that has them instock. The kit runs $179 more then what I wanna spend but at the same time I'm a true believer of you get what you pay for.

Cant go wrong with them Vintage Blades LLC. Fair warning though don't confuse it with vintagestraightrazors.com. The second is NOT recommended I have made several purchases from Vintage Blades LLC and have had one of the better experiences I have ever had buying online. The staff is attentive and helpful and they encourage you to ask lots of questions and will guide you in the right direction. Same goes for after the sale. One of the most important things to look for when purchasing your first razor is that it must be professionally honed. They do not come that way from the factory and can result in a very uncomfortable shave that could turn you off to the world of SR shaving and cost you extra money when you have to send it off for a professional honing. All of Vintage Blades LLC razors come honed by the the very best in the business. This is important because you really want to start with an edge that you can use as a point of reference to what a shave ready razor really is.

I also started with a Dovo BQ, and totally loved it, but cannot say enough about the whipped dog option if you want to save some coin. I haven't used his strops, but he does make a great silvertip brush for about 30 bucks that blows my Simpson Beaufort that came in my SRD starter kit out of the water.

Whipped dog is great and I love buying from him but I started with a dovo bq 5/8. Also had VDH kit for soap then bought a tweezerman pure badger hair brush. And I had a dovo bridal strop 1 1/2 inch wide. But soon bought the big daddy from SRD. And the razor that I love is a $22 special I restored from e-bay which is a Geneva fluid steel whitch is awesome. But the whole reason I'm replying is to say I'm not as happy with the dovo as I think I should be having spent $80. I also bought a boker 5/8 and this razor I'm VERRY HAPPY to have purchased for $115 and that's what I would do if I was to do it all over again.
Thank you,
Swerve
